Skydive Sim Introduces Real-World Winds and Custom Wing Loading

No two skydives take place under the same conditions, and no single canopy setup is right for every jumper.
Skydive Sim’s Real-World Winds and Custom Canopy features give players more control over both sides of that experience. By default Skydive Sim loads the current winds and gusts for a selected real-world location and it lets you configure a canopy using your body weight, gear weight, canopy size, wing loading, and canopy type.
Together, these features create a more personalized way to jump and fly across Google Earth locations around the world.
Load the Current Winds for Your Location
The Real-World Winds feature retrieves the current wind and gust information for the location you select before your jump.
In the video, we choose Skydive Spaceland Houston as the jump location. Skydive Sim then loads the current conditions for that area.
At the time of the demonstration, the winds were approximately seven to eight miles per hour and coming from the southeast.
Rather than using the same manually selected wind conditions everywhere, Real-World Winds allow the environment to change based on the location and current weather information. Select another drop zone or destination, and you may receive a completely different combination of wind direction, wind speed, and gusts.
This gives players another reason to revisit familiar locations. The terrain may be the same, but the conditions can change from one session to the next.
Experience the Wind Closer to the Terrain
For the demonstration, the jump begins at a lower altitude so the flight remains closer to the terrain.
This makes it easier to observe the surroundings and experience the selected wind conditions while flying through the location. Under canopy, the wind becomes an important part of how you plan your holding area and approach your landing pattern.
Real-World Winds can also make exploring new destinations more interesting. A location with light winds may produce a very different flight from the same location on a day with stronger winds or gustier conditions.
Create a Canopy Based on Your Own Wing Loading
Real-World Winds determine the conditions around you, while the Custom Canopy feature lets you define what you are flying.
Skydive Sim allows you to enter:
Your body weight
Your gear weight
Your canopy size
Using that information, the simulator calculates your total exit weight and wing loading.
Wing loading is commonly expressed as the jumper’s exit weight divided by the canopy size in square feet. For example, an exit weight of 200 pounds under a 200-square-foot canopy produces a wing loading of approximately 1.0.
Instead of choosing only from a generic list of canopy presets, players can enter numbers that more closely represent a particular setup.
Why Wing Loading Matters
Wing loading is an important part of how a canopy setup is defined.
A larger canopy carrying the same exit weight will have a lower wing loading. A smaller canopy carrying that weight will have a higher wing loading. Changing the jumper’s body weight, gear weight, or canopy size will therefore change the calculated result.
The Custom Canopy menu makes those relationships easy to see. Enter a different canopy size and the wing loading updates automatically. Adjust the body or gear weight and the simulator recalculates the exit weight and wing loading for the new configuration.
This allows players to create and compare multiple canopy setups without having to calculate every value separately.
Select Your Canopy Type
Wing loading is not the only setting used to define the canopy.
After entering the weight and canopy information, players can also select a general canopy type:
Student
Intermediate
Advanced
The canopy-type selection helps further define the setup beyond the numerical wing loading.
Two canopies may have a similar size or wing loading while still being intended for different experience levels or styles of flight. Combining the calculated wing loading with the canopy-type selection gives Skydive Sim more information about the setup the player wants to represent.
Save and Load Multiple Canopy Setups
Once you are satisfied with a custom canopy, you can save it for future sessions.
Players with more than one saved setup can use the load button to return to their previously created canopies. This makes it easy to switch between different configurations without re-entering body weight, gear weight, canopy size, and canopy type each time.
You might create one setup based on a larger student canopy, another based on an intermediate canopy, and another representing a more advanced configuration. Each saved canopy can then be loaded and flown under the same conditions for comparison.
Combine Your Canopy With Real-World Conditions
The real value comes from using the two features together.
First, choose or create the canopy setup you want to fly. Then select a real-world location and load its current winds and gusts.
This lets you experience different combinations of:
Exit weight
Canopy size
Wing loading
Canopy type
Location
Wind direction
Wind speed
Gusts
You can fly multiple canopy configurations under the same winds or return to the same location later when the real-world conditions have changed.
Real-World Winds make the location more dynamic. Custom wing loading makes the canopy more personal.
Together, they give Skydive Sim players greater control over the jump before they ever leave the aircraft.
Real-World Winds and Custom Canopies are currently available as beta features in Skydive Sim.
