Skydive Sim Creates Dynamic Water Across Google Earth

Most games know exactly where players will go.

Developers design a level, place objects by hand, and optimize every detail for that specific environment.

Skydive Sim is different.

Using Google Earth, players can skydive or explore almost anywhere on Earth. One person might fly over the Amalfi Coast, another over the Great Lakes, while someone else decides to explore a small island in the Pacific.

That freedom created an interesting engineering challenge.

Building for a Planet Instead of a Level

Adding dynamic water to a traditional game usually means solving the problem for a specific environment.

Our challenge was different.

We couldn't assume where players would go next. The same system needed to work whether someone was flying over oceans, lakes, islands, or coastlines around the world.

The goal wasn't simply to animate water.

The goal was to create a solution that could adapt to an entire planet while remaining suitable for both standalone VR headsets and PC.

Making the World Feel Alive

One of the most rewarding parts of simulator development is working on features that many players may never consciously notice.

Instead, they simply notice that the world feels more believable.

Dynamic water is one of those features.

As players fly lower over coastlines or explore new locations, subtle movement across the water helps transform static satellite imagery into an environment that feels more alive.

The Best Engineering Is Often Invisible

When a feature works well, most people never think about how it was built.

That's perfectly okay.

Our goal has never been to create technology for its own sake. The goal is to build a world that feels immersive enough that players forget about the technology entirely and simply enjoy flying.

Dynamic water is another step toward that vision.

As we continue developing Skydive Sim, our focus remains the same: making the world feel more alive while preserving the smooth performance that VR demands.
